Grey by name, anything but grey in flavour. Zesty, zippy and delightfully invigorating, Earl Grey is the classic black tea with a citrus and bergamot twist. Much loved for hundreds of years as the choice du jour for the mid-afternoon scone fuelled snack-a-thon that makes up traditional English afternoon tea, our best Earl Grey has a distinctly lemony character that’s guaranteed to put a spring in your step. Named after Prime Minister Charles Grey, Britain’s leader during the early 19th century, who reputedly received a gift of bergamot oil infused tea from China as a diplomatic present. He loved this distinctive blend so much that he asked British tea merchants to recreate it (and pop his name on it, whilst they were at it). Frankly, if it’s good enough for the British aristocracy, it’s good enough for us!

Tea time ideas

As that most classically British of tea blends, it only seems right to enjoy a sophisticated cup of Earl Grey whilst socialising with friends over a spot of afternoon tea. Think cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches—with the crust cut off, as is tradition—teeny, tiny cakes, and fluffy scones coated in thick splodges of good quality jam and clotted cream. Pure heaven when paired with the refreshingly lemony flavours and aromas of a good solid cup of Earl Grey tea. Though not necessary, fancy frocks and monocles are encouraged outfits, and make sure you extend your pinky when sipping! If you’re not much of an Anglophile, Earl Grey’s lemony flavours also make a lovely pairing with sweet treats that have a decidedly citrus bent to them—think a loaf of sticky lemon cake or a slice of honey and lavender sponge.

Getting the best from your brew

Our lovely Earl Grey tea benefits from a nice long 2-3 minutes of steeping in boiled water that’s been left to cool just a little. You’ll know the brew is ready when the water’s turned a lovely clear amber colour. Though typically enjoyed without milk, so you don’t mask its distinctly lemony character, we won’t tell anyone if you enjoy your cup of Earl Grey with a splash of the white stuff added.
