There’s no two ways about it, the British love their tea. It’s an institution. And according to this tea-loving nation, there’s only one ‘proper’ way to brew a classic British cuppa – and that’s with black tea and milk.

The good news is, black tea is one of the simplest teas to make. But first you’ll need to choose which type of black tea you’d like to make. There’s a huge selection to choose from, but we suggest starting with a classic black tea:

Lipton® Yellow Label ® Black Tea

With over 4000 hours of sunshine, the taste of Lipton® Yellow Label® tea gives you a gentle lift, brightening your day.

Getting The Water Right

If you’re using tap water, let it run cold briefly before filling the kettle. Tea needs oxygen to infuse properly, and tap water loses oxygen if it sits in the pipes for too long.

The All-Important Teapot

Generally, the best teapots are ceramic, as you can use them to brew any type of tea and they retain heat well. Cast iron is an option, too.

  1. Boil the water. Black tea needs hotter water, so let it reach a rolling boil. For other types, like green tea, you’ll only need little bubbles.

  2. Add tea. Pour your water on to the tea to help ‘agitate’ the leaves. This helps the infusion.

  3. Brew. Leave the tea to infuse and let nature weave her little magic spell!

  4. Remove the tea. Lift loose tea leaves out in their infuser or pour the tea over a strainer. If using a teabag, lift it out with a teaspoon.

  5. Serve. Take a moment to enjoy your tea. You’re now ready for anything!

Adding Milk Or Lemon

You can drink your black tea solo, or you can pair it with milk or lemon if you prefer. Lemon is often used with Earl Grey as it brings out the citrus flavors. Milk in black tea is a classic British thing. And, whether you add it first or second, is purely a matter of taste.

How Long To Brew?

Brewing times vary depending on what type of tea you’re using.

  • Darjeeling brew time: 3 minutes

  • Earl Grey brew time: 5 minutes

  • English Breakfast brew time: 4 minutes

And there you are; the perfect way to brew black tea. Time to recharge!
